Hypertension Medication Side Effects

by | Jun 1, 2018 | Internal Medicine

Dear Doctor,

I am on multiple medications for high blood pressure prescribed my cardiologist; my blood pressure was extremely difficult to get under control, but this regimen has been working for me for the last 10 years. I have now developed some incontinence and one of the changes my primary care physician wants to do is stop my hydrochlorothiazide, a water pill that helps with my blood pressure. I have been on this medication for 10 years, can this really be causing the problem?

Hypertension or incontinence?

Dear Hypertension or incontinence,

Even though you have been on hydrochlorothiazide for many years, it is possible for it to cause incontinence as you get older. Hypertension medications can cause different side effects in patients depending on their age. Furthermore, as you get older your pelvic muscles get weaker and this may make it difficult for your bladder to hold the same amount of fluid as a younger person. There are multiple treatment options for incontinence, such as medications, kegel’s exercises, biofeedback, tens units, and simple scheduled voiding. Please consider discussing some of these options as well as other hypertension medication side effects with your primary care physician. I hope this information was helpful.
